Under the expert medical direction of Dr. Harley Moseley, The “Return to Living” Stroke Rehabilitation Programme at the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Barbados is a comprehensive, community-based program, designed to minimize the long-term physiological and psychological impacts of a stroke.
By focusing on individualized care, the initiative helps participants reverse functional limitations, manage cardiovascular risk factors, and maximize their physical independence. In a compassionate and encouraging environment, survivors are treated not just as medical cases, but as individuals working actively to reclaim their lives, confidence, and dignity.
At the core of the program’s success is a dedicated, multidisciplinary medical team that builds a customized roadmap for every participant. Dr. Harley Moseley and collaborating specialists oversee each survivor’s clinical progress, ensuring that therapies adapt as the patient grows stronger. Certified occupational therapists, and physiotherapists guide participants through safe, low-intensity aerobic exercises to restore mobility and balance, while occupational therapists help individuals relearn essential daily living skills for household independence.
Additionally, speech and language specialists provide crucial support for communication and swallowing difficulties, while counseling services offer emotional and psychological reassurance to help families cope with the lifestyle transitions following a stroke.
Joining the programme is a straightforward process designed to prioritize patient safety and appropriate clinical placement. Prospective participants can enter the program through a direct referral from their primary care physician, neurologist, or hospital discharge team, ensuring our medical directors have a clear understanding of the individual’s medical history. Once a referral is submitted, our clinical team schedules a comprehensive intake assessment at our Ladymeade Gardens facility to evaluate the survivor’s current mobility, specific rehabilitation goals, and overall health status.
Following this evaluation, a customized attendance schedule is created, welcoming the participant into our structured weekly sessions where their rehabilitation journey officially begins. Conveniently located at Ladymeade Gardens, Bridgetown, the programme emphasizes accessible, long-term support that bridges the gap between hospital discharge and a full return to community life. Recognizing that recovery involves the entire household, the Foundation integrates patient education with comprehensive family support, empowering caregivers with the practical tools and knowledge required for safe at-home care. Through structured physical training, peer encouragement, and expert clinical management, the Stroke Rehabilitation Programme serves as a foundational pillar of hope, guiding Barbadian families step-by-step toward a stronger, healthier, and more independent future.
