The Heart & Stroke Foundation of Barbados, Immediate Past President, Mr Dru Symmonds SCM, J.P. Mr. H. (Dru) Symmonds has been dynamically involved in this organization’s successful development since its inception. Whilst the Chairman of the ‘Health and Social Services Committee’ of the Lions Club of Barbados South in 1984, it was he who instigated the creation of the Heart Foundation of Barbados Inc., as a project of his club. He teamed up with Cardiologist Dr. Trevor Hassell, then Head of Department of Medicine at the QEH, and through their shared initiative, the Heart Foundation of Barbados Inc. was formed as a non-profit organization under the Companies Act of Barbados on 18th April 1985. He was the Foundation’s Vice President for the first 10 years of its life, and after that took over the Presidency where he served for thirteen years, and from which position he has stood down effective 18th April 2008. At the 2009 AGM of the Heart & Stroke Foundation he became Vice President Financial Services (Treasurer).

Mr. Symmonds has a strong marketing and administrative background inclusive of experience in aviation and manufacturing. Prior to that, he was a member of the British Army [Royal Corps of Signals] during which time he earned the General Service Medal for Campaign duty while engaged with the Far East Land Forces in Borneo in the 1960’s.

A businessman, now semi-retired, he has been privileged to serve the community in several capacities on a number of ‘trade’ and Government Statuary Boards over the years.

‘Dru’ is a Past President of the Lions Club of Barbados South, and regionally has held the office of Cabinet Secretary/Treasurer, District 60B [1993-94], as well as that of Council Secretary/Treasurer of the Multiple District 60 of Lions Clubs International [1994-95].

Mr. Symmonds was appointed to the Order of Barbados with the award of Silver Crown of Merit (SCM) on the occasion of the 2006 Barbados Independence National awards, for highly meritorious service by his contribution to the community, and in particular the healthcare sector. He is a Justice of the Peace.

‘Dru’ and his wife Margôt [nee Hutson] have been married for forty-two years and have three sons.
